Reading Success Leads to Sweet Rewards for Virtus Academy 5th and 6th Graders

Wolf Pack students are always up for a challenge, especially when prizes are involved.

In March and April, we hosted two Ready, Set, Read contests for students in grades 4–10 using our Achieve3000 Literacy curriculum. Achieve3000 provides differentiated instruction to accelerate reading performance, motivate students to set personal reading goals, and track their progress through online engagement.

The first contest ran March 20–27, and the students who read the most Achieve3000 articles and received a passing score on the online quiz were rewarded with an all-you-can-eat ice cream social. The prize went to 25 5th graders, and their teachers, John Huggins, Shelbi Stewart, and Jennifer McClam, received $100 gift cards.

The second Ready, Set, Read contest ran from March 29 to April 8, and 65 6th graders who read the most Achieve3000 articles and received a passing score on the online quiz were rewarded with Chick-fil-A gift cards. Similarly, their teachers, Britteny Ard, Kevin Helmer, and Merdell Nesbit, received $100 gift cards.

The contests are just one example of how Virtus Academy’s culture of literacy is growing and how Achieve3000 is helping our students catch up, get ahead, and make impressive strides toward reading proficiency and academic achievement.

“We’re extremely proud of every student who participated in the contests and recognize the commitment to reading excellence achieved by some of our 5th and 6th graders,” said Dr. Brian Carpenter, Virtus Academy managing consultant. “It’s obvious our students are making impressive gains in reading and other subjects, and we look forward to finding more ways to challenge their skills and celebrate their accomplishments.”
