Teacher Assistant
General Summary
Under regular supervision, performs specialized work by assisting teachers in instructing and directing the activities of students in kindergarten classes (or in other classes as assigned where an instructional assistant is required to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment). Assists school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested. This is a 190-day position. Reports to the assigned classroom teacher, and the Principal.
Essential Job Functions
- Assists students with exercises and class activities; concentrates efforts with small groups of students and individuals as necessary
- Compiles, prepares and organizes materials and classroom for instruction and classroom activities
- Assists in cleaning and storing of materials after completion of activities
- Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher
- Models proper behavior and play
- Assists teacher by recording daily attendance, grading assignments, recording and/or analyzing test scores/grades, substituting as needed, setting up special projects, escorting children to other areas of the school, monitoring student behavior, packing / unpacking student communication folders, running errands, etc.
- Assists teacher in collecting and receipting monies for monthly activity fees, school fees, school pictures, field trips, meal fees, etc.
- Supervises and assists students when unloading and loading buses, in the halls, on field trips, during testing, during lunch and on school grounds
- Prepares daily snacks for students
- Assists individual children with special needs and/or in need of special attention
- Coordinates and/or participates in special programs or projects as assigned
- Maintains a clean and orderly classroom
- Attends staff meetings as required; participates in in-service training programs
- Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility
- Keeps abreast of developments in early childhood education curriculum and instruction
- Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills

- Operates a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, copier, calculator, telephone, audio-visual equipment, laminating machine, binding machine, refrigerator, oven, etc.; uses clerical, copier, computer supplies, arts and crafts supplies, instructional supplies and materials
- Presents a positive image of Virtus Academy at all times
- Willingly performs other related duties as assigned
Job Specifications
Education and Experience
Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent to the satisfactory completion of two years of college education, supplemented by some experience working with young children in the classroom or in a child care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the methods, policies, procedures and activities of Virtus Academy which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
- Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained
- Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities
Skills/Effort
- Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations
- Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the classroom teacher, other teachers, administrators, other school staff, students, parents, volunteers and the general public
Working Conditions
- Conducts duties in a school environment with some exposure to environmental conditions
- Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with students
- Physical demands include walking or standing and lifting/moving of items related to the job on a recurring basis
- Occasional local travel is required; overnight travel is not required
- Job requires the operation of standard office equipment
Responsibility
- Responsible for the supervision of students in the classroom and in out-of-classroom activities during the school day
- Responsible for classroom materials and supplies
- Responsible for completing assigned work within the deadlines in accordance with directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures
- Responsible for attending and remaining at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding attendance, absenteeism and tardiness, providing adequate notice to administration with respect to vacation time and leave requests
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school’s policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
